Art for Humanity Call for NY Artists

From: "gxartstudio"
Date: Feb 8, 2010 11:01 AM
Subject: NYEP: www.EventHeadquarters.com Art for Humanity Call for Artists
To:

Are you an artist? Have you been watching the news and want to decide how you can help the victims and contribute?

On March 12th and 13th, I along with another colleague will be holding an Art Exhbit fundraiser to assist GASKOV CLERGE foundation, this wonderful organization that has been doing work in Haiti for over 10 years.

Upon seeing the devastation in Haiti, they immediately realized their annual summer medical mission would not suffice. On January 30th, they embarked on one of a series of 4 weekly missions to provide immediate help to a country in desperate need of assistant and care. please visit them at www.gaskov.org to get more detailed information.

I need your help. I need artists to donate a piece to this exhibit. The art gallery where the event will be held focuses on Native art. So anything within that genre or similar genre would be interested. The beautiful GINA gallery was gracious enough to donate the space to us. You can visit them at http://www.ginagallerynyc.com/index.php. All proceeds from art sales will be given directly to gaskov Clerge.

Mid Week Eats to Support Haiti

Go to newyork.timeout.com and search their site for "haiti" and you'll see an ongoing stream of things to do that are benefiting Haiti over the coming weeks.

For the gastronomes who want to put their passion to a good cause here are some mid-week restaurants to check out:

Tuesday Jan 19th 2010

Marco Canora’s cozy Italian spot Hearth will be donating 50 percent of their gross revenue from sales on Tuesday, January 19, to relief efforts. The restaurant fired off a touching e-mail in support of one of their Haitian staffers—definitely a worthwhile place to donate your charitable dining dollars.

http://newyork.timeout.com/restaurants/east-village/2963/hearth

Wednesday Jan 20th 2010

New York restaurateurs have a reputation for being tough, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have hearts. Damien Brassel of the LES’s Knife + Fork and Philippe Massoud of Lebanese eatery Ilili will be donating a portion of their profits to help Haitian earthquake recovery efforts. Brassel will give 20 percent of every tab on Wednesday, January 20, while Ilili will donate 10 percent of proceeds to relief efforts on Sunday the 24th. Massoud is also encouraging his staff to donate 5 percent of their gratuities, and has contacted restaurants and PR firms across the city in the hopes of getting them to join in as well.

Train for Free for the Next Disaster

Soon after the news of the Earthquake in Haiti last week I frantically searched online for ways I could volunteer to help. I have some training from the San Francisco Fire Department with how to be a NERT volunteer following an earthquake and hoped there might be an opportunity to use my skills in some way.

And that's how I came across Julie Schwietert at the Matador Network who has been doing her best to use social media, networking and her clout to gather as much in-person and fiscal aid to help the people of Haiti as possible.

The over-all takeaway message from the experience this past week has been: if you want to help people during a disaster, GET QUALIFIED... especially as a medical / disaster response professional.

New Yorkers can take their first steps on this mission this MLK Monday (1/18/2010) by signing up for a free Disaster Reserve Training with the Red Cross here:

Learn a language... the Mashable way

Mashable recently published an article on 3 top uses of social media in the Education system. Rather than having schools fight social media, the article illustrates how educational institutions that embrace technology actually augment student performance.

My challenge to you ~ if, according to the article, kids are able to learn languages better by having ongoing Skype sessions with kids from another country, why not see how well you can pick up a new language in the same way. Sites like The Mixxer can help you do this, but you could have fun finding other ways to make international friends.

Raise awareness for the Fund for Public Schools by documenting your journey learning a new language via Skype with new friends from abroad and posting links to video in the comments, facebook or @NY_OhMy.

Take a stranger skating in the spirit of modestneeds.com

From now until Jan 24th The Pond at Bryant Park is the place to go ice skating.

The website modestneeds.org helps those who are struggling in these harsh economic times make ends meet.

What's the connection? Well, as on the website you can donate a little to help someone a lot, why not do the same IRL while you're at Bryant park. Find someone who is watching the skaters but never seems to skate and offer to rent them some skates to take them skating. You never know, your small gesture could really brighten their day!

Random Act of Kindness Week 2

This coming week (Jan 11th - 15th) kick start your philanthropic acts by offering to buy someone who can't afford to eat, a meal at Shake Shack in NYC. Ideas include:

1) Make friends with someone homeless... find out their story, find out what kind of food they would like to eat, offer to buy them a meal. Find out what's being done in your community to help people who are homeless find something to eat.

2) Consider donating to a food charity like Food Gatherers to help alleviate hunger.

What random acts of kindness are you going to do this week to help someone eat properly this coming week? Post your stories / links in the comments, on facebook or @NY_OhMy.
